Asia’s First Ever Vertical Forest Is Being Built In China & Will Produce 132 Pounds Of Oxygen Every Single Day

Each year, there is increasing number of people who are moving out of the country and into the cities, this is causing an incredible amount of city air pollution and a result becomes dangerous to our health and environment.

According to a new research conducted by WHO, outdoor air pollution has risen over 8% since 2010.

Dr. Maria Neira the Director of Public Health of WHO said:

“We have a public health emergency in many countries. Urban air pollution continues to rise at an alarming rate, wreaking havoc on human health. It’s dramatic, one of the biggest problems we are facing globally, with terrible future costs to society.” She also added,

“The cost for countries is enormous. Air pollution affects economies and people’s quality of life. It leads to major chronic diseases and to people ultimately dying.”

Air pollution in China has reached very dangerous levels.  New scientific studies found that 1.4 million premature deaths occur every single year; this is around 4,000 deaths a day caused by air pollution.

Italian architect Stefano Boeri, has already built two vertical living forests also known as the Bosca Verticale in Milan. The Nanjing Green Towers will include 600 tall trees, 500 medium-sized trees (a total of 1100 trees from 23 local species) and over 2500 cascading plants that will cover a 6,000 square meter area.

Boeri hopes that all of these trees and cascading plants will help improve the air pollution and absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide each year, and produce 132 pounds (app. 60 kg) of oxygen each day. The project is expected to open towards the end of next year in Nanjing city, and the quality of oxygen the vertical forest is expected to produce more than 3000 times purer air than the city’s current standard.

The reason China has chosen this model is because;

 “Vertical Forest is a model for a sustainable residential building, a project for metropolitan reforestation contributing to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity without the implication of expanding the city upon the territory. It is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city that operates in relation to policies for reforestation and naturalization of large urban and metropolitan borders. The vegetal system of the Vertical Forest contributes to the construction of a microclimate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces oxygen.”

So this may be the first of its kind in China, but the architecture company intends to build more green towers in Shanghai, Guizhou, Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, and Chongqing.
